10K vs 14K vs 18K Gold: What's the Difference in Value?

The karat tells you how much of the metal is pure gold. 10K gold is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.3% and 18K is 75%, with the rest made up of alloy metals like copper, silver and zinc. Higher karat means more gold, a richer color and more value per gram. Lower karat is harder and more resistant to scratches and dents.

Not sure which karat you have? Our guide to what gold stamps mean covers every common mark.

Is 10K Gold Real Gold?

Yes. 10K gold is 10 parts pure gold out of 24, and in the U.S. it's the lowest karat that can legally be sold as gold. Anything lower, like the 9K gold common in the UK, can't be called gold here. 10K is popular for class rings, chains and everyday jewelry because it's affordable and tough.

Which Karat Is Worth More?

Gold jewelry is valued on its pure gold content, which is the weight of the piece multiplied by its purity. Here's what that looks like for three 10-gram pieces:

  • 10 grams of 18K contains 7.5 grams of pure gold.
  • 10 grams of 14K contains about 5.8 grams.
  • 10 grams of 10K contains about 4.2 grams.

So at the same weight, 18K is worth roughly 1.8 times as much as 10K, and 14K roughly 1.4 times as much. But weight matters just as much as karat: a heavy 10K chain can easily be worth more than a light 18K one. Our live gold price per gram calculator shows today's value by karat, and how gold buyers calculate offers walks through the full math.

Which Karat Is Best for Everyday Wear?

Pure gold is soft, and the alloy metals are what make it hard enough to wear. That's why 14K is the most popular karat in the U.S.: it balances a good gold color with the strength to handle daily wear on rings and bracelets. 10K is the toughest and the most affordable. 18K has a richer color and feels more luxurious, but it scratches and bends more easily, so it's often chosen for pieces that see less wear, like earrings and pendants.

Yellow, White and Rose Gold

The color comes from the alloy, not the karat. Copper gives rose gold its pink tone, and white metals like palladium or nickel make white gold. Any karat can be yellow, white or rose, and many pieces combine colors, like the two-tone bracelet pictured. White gold is usually plated with rhodium for a brighter white, and that plating wears thin over time, letting a slightly warmer color show through. Re-plating restores it.

A 14K white gold ring contains exactly as much gold as a 14K yellow gold ring of the same weight, so it's worth the same for its gold.

Does Lower-Karat Gold Tarnish or Irritate Skin?

Because 10K is more than half alloy, it can darken slightly over time and is a little more likely to discolor skin for some people. Some white gold alloys contain nickel, a common allergen. People with sensitive skin often do better with higher karats or nickel-free alloys. Regular gentle cleaning keeps any karat looking its best: here's how to clean gold jewelry safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 14K or 18K gold better?

It depends on what matters to you. 18K has more gold, a richer color and more value per gram. 14K is harder and better suited to jewelry that gets daily wear, like rings and bracelets.

Is 10K gold worth selling?

Yes. 10K gold is real gold and is bought for its gold content, which is about 41.7% of its weight. Heavy 10K chains, rings and class rings can be worth a meaningful amount.

Does 10K gold tarnish?

It can darken slightly over time because more than half of it is alloy metal. Gentle regular cleaning keeps it bright. Higher karats tarnish less.

Is white gold real gold?

Yes. White gold is real gold alloyed with white metals and usually plated with rhodium. A 14K white gold piece contains the same amount of gold as a 14K yellow gold piece of the same weight.
