Where to Buy, Sell & Trade Designer Bags in NYC (2026)

Black, tan and burgundy leather handbags with a dust bag on a glass counter inside East Village Buyers in NYC

A designer bag is one of the few things you own that can hold its value, and New York has more ways to buy, sell and trade one than anywhere else in the country. The catch is that those ways pay very differently. One shop hands you cash today. Another lists your bag and pays you after it sells, sometimes months later, minus a commission. A third gives you credit toward your next bag.

We're East Village Buyers, a buy, sell and trade shop at 39 Avenue A, and designer bags come across our counter every day. Below is every NYC option we'd actually consider in October 2026, including the ones that pay more than we do if you're willing to wait, with how each one works and who it's best for.

Quick answer

Want cash today? Walk into East Village Buyers on Avenue A, no appointment. Fashionphile's Chelsea flagship also pays once your bag is authenticated, and recommends booking an appointment to sell.

Want the highest price and can wait? Consign with The RealReal, Michael's Consignment or Rebag. You're paid after the bag sells.

Want a different bag? Trade in at East Village Buyers or Rebag, or take store credit, which pays 5% to 20% more than cash at several shops.

Selling a rare Hermès? Talk to a specialist like Madison Avenue Couture, or an auction house.

Sell, Consign or Trade: How Designer Bag Resale Works in NYC

Every place on this list uses some mix of three models. The right one depends less on the bag and more on how soon you need the money.

The Best Places to Sell or Trade Designer Bags in NYC

#1
East Village Buyers
39 Avenue A, East Village
BuySellTradeSame-day cash

Our shop. Bring your bag in and we authenticate it at the counter, in front of you: the stitching, the heat stamp, the date code or serial, and the hardware. Then we make an offer and pay cash the same day. There's no commission, no waiting for a buyer and no shipping your bag across the country. You can also trade it toward another bag in our case. We buy Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Hermès, Goyard, Dior, Fendi, Prada, Celine, Bottega Veneta and more, plus wallets and small leather goods. No appointment needed.

Best for: same-day cash, trading one bag for another, and bags with some wear that consignment shops turn away.

#2
Fashionphile Flagship NYC
601 W 26th St, 4th Floor, Chelsea
BuySellStore credit +10%

A 60,000-square-foot showroom and authentication center in the Starrett-Lehigh Building, opened in 2022, with a vault of roughly 15,000 bags that Fashionphile calls the world's largest Birkin collection. Selling in person gets you a live offer, and you're paid once the bag is authenticated. Taking store credit adds 10%. Shoppers can walk in; for selling, an appointment is recommended.

Best for: a firm offer on Hermès, Chanel and Louis Vuitton, and shoppers who want a huge selection.

#3
The RealReal
80 Wooster St, SoHo · 870 Madison Ave · 163 Court St, Brooklyn
BuyConsignment

The biggest consignment operation in the city, with consignment offices at all three stores and free valuations. Your share depends on the sale price and how much you sell. The RealReal advertises up to 85% for Chanel and Hermès bags, which is a ceiling rather than a typical rate. You're paid the month after your item sells, with 5% more if you take site credit. Items stay listed for up to a year, and pulling one early comes with fees.

Best for: sellers in no rush, and buyers who want the largest in-person selection.

#4
Rebag
Westfield World Trade Center · Bloomingdale's SoHo, 504 Broadway
BuySellConsignmentTrade

Rebag offers all three models. You can sell outright, consign, or trade in for credit that Rebag says is worth up to 5% more. Offers come from its pricing tool, Clair. Consignment money lands in your Rebag wallet within 15 business days of the sale. Its older Madison Avenue and West Broadway stores no longer appear on Rebag's store list.

Best for: trading up, and comparing a buyout offer against consignment.

#5
What Goes Around Comes Around
351 West Broadway & 113 Wooster St, SoHo
BuySellStore credit +20%

SoHo's go-to for vintage Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton. It buys outright and doesn't do consignment, but you can't sell over the counter. You email photos and hear back in 7 to 10 business days. If you accept, you ship the bag with a prepaid label, and payment takes about three weeks from acceptance. Choosing store credit pays 20% more than cash and arrives the same day.

Best for: buying vintage, and sellers who don't need the money soon.

#6
Madison Avenue Couture
W 57th St showroom, Midtown (by appointment)
BuySellConsignment

A Hermès and Chanel specialist since 2010. Despite the name, the showroom is on West 57th Street, and visits are by appointment only. It prefers to buy never-worn bags outright and consigns pre-owned and exotic pieces, typically paying 75% to 85% of its estimated selling price. Expect an estimate in two to three days, and payment by bank transfer five to seven business days after inspection on outright sales.

Best for: high-value Birkins, Kellys and Chanel.

#7
Michael's Consignment
1125 Madison Ave, Upper East Side
BuyConsignment

Family-run since 1954 and one of the few shops that publishes its split: consignors get 70% on items over $7,500, 60% over $5,000 and 50% below that. Payment comes by check the month after the sale, or 10% more as store credit. It takes Chanel and Hermès at any time; most other pieces must be no more than two years old. The shop says most items sell within four weeks.

Best for: consigning recent, high-end pieces on clear terms.

#8
Designer Revival
324 E 81st St, Upper East Side
BuyConsignment

A woman-owned shop that calls itself one of the city's first consignment stores. Consignors earn 20% to 70% over a 90-day window. Prices drop 20% after 30 days and 50% after 60, though you can ask to protect select designer pieces from markdowns. Checks go out on the 15th of each month for the previous month's sales.

Best for: mid-priced designer bags, and casual consignors.

#9
myGemma
270 Madison Ave, Suite 704, Midtown (by appointment)
SellConsignmentTrade

A private, appointment-only office that buys Chanel, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Goyard, Dior and Gucci, along with jewelry and watches. Outright sales carry no fees, and Gemma says payment can come within 24 hours of a quote. It also says consignment can pay up to 25% more, and loyalty members get 10% extra on trade-ins.

Best for: a quiet, by-appointment sale.

#10
Christie's & Sotheby's
20 Rockefeller Plaza · 945 Madison Ave
Auction consignment

For rare and exotic Hermès, the auction houses are the top of the market. Both run handbag sales in New York, Christie's from Rockefeller Plaza and Sotheby's from its new home in the Breuer Building, which opened in November 2025. Valuations are free, but fees and timelines aren't published, and everyday Louis Vuitton or Gucci isn't what they're looking for.

Best for: exceptional pieces only.

Store Credit Pays More: Here's How Much

If you plan to buy another bag anyway, taking credit instead of cash is one of the easiest ways to get more for the one you're selling. Here's what each shop publishes:

ShopBonus for credit instead of cash
What Goes Around Comes Around20% more, same day
Fashionphile10% more
Michael's Consignment10% more
The RealReal5% more as site credit
RebagTrade credit worth up to 5% more

At East Village Buyers you can trade your bag toward anything in the shop, including sneakers, streetwear and jewelry as well as other bags.

Which Designer Bags Hold Their Value Best

Louis Vuitton Monogram tote with matching pouch Black Fendi shoulder bag with gold hardware next to its box

Classic monogram and logo-hardware bags with their accessories are the easiest designer pieces to resell.

Brand matters more than almost anything else. In Rebag's 2024 Clair report, the average resale value as a share of the retail price was:

  • Goyard: 104%
  • Hermès: 100%
  • Chanel: 92%
  • Louis Vuitton: 88%
  • Celine: 64%

Those are averages across a brand. Classic shapes in neutral colors hold up best, and seasonal colors and trend pieces fall faster. That's also why the same brand can get very different offers bag to bag. How to Get the Best Offer on Your Designer Bag

Every serious buyer authenticates before making an offer, then prices the bag on condition and completeness. A few things reliably help:

  • Bring everything that came with it. The functional pieces matter most: straps, locks, keys and clochettes. The dust bag, box, receipt and authenticity card help too.
  • Don't alter or "restore" it first. Re-dyed edges, swapped hardware and custom paint can lower an offer, and some buyers won't take altered bags at all.
  • Be honest in your photos. If you get a quote by text or email, show the corners, handles, interior and any wear. An offer based on flattering photos usually drops when the buyer sees the bag in person.
  • Compare a cash offer with a consignment estimate. Consignment can net more, but you wait, pay a commission and may face markdowns. Cash today is often the better deal once you count all that.
  • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. New York law requires it when a secondhand dealer buys from you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I sell a designer bag for cash in NYC today?

East Village Buyers at 39 Avenue A authenticates bags at the counter and pays cash the same day, no appointment needed. Fashionphile's Chelsea flagship pays once your bag is authenticated and recommends an appointment for selling. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.

Is it better to consign a designer bag or sell it outright?

Consignment can pay more for sought-after bags in excellent condition, but you wait until it sells, pay a commission and may face markdowns. Selling outright pays less than the eventual sale price but is immediate and has no fees, which usually makes it better for worn bags or when you need the money now.

Can I trade in a designer bag in NYC?

Yes. East Village Buyers lets you trade your bag toward anything in the shop. Rebag offers trade-in credit it says is worth up to 5% more than its cash offer, and several shops pay 10% to 20% more if you take store credit.

Which designer bags hold their resale value best?

In Rebag's 2024 Clair report, Goyard bags averaged 104% of retail on resale, Hermès 100%, Chanel 92%, Louis Vuitton 88% and Celine 64%. Classic shapes in neutral colors hold value best.

Do I need an appointment to sell a designer bag in NYC?

Not at East Village Buyers, where walk-ins are welcome. Fashionphile recommends an appointment for selling, Madison Avenue Couture and myGemma are appointment-only, and What Goes Around Comes Around takes submissions by email.

What should I bring when I sell my bag?

Bring the strap, lock, keys and clochette if your bag came with them, plus the dust bag, box, receipt and authenticity card if you have them. You also need a valid government-issued photo ID, which New York requires for secondhand sales.
