Sell Gold Bars & Bullion in NYC

Bullion is the most transparent thing we buy. There is no artistry to argue about and no collector premium to negotiate. There is a weight, a purity, and a live market price.

The calculation is weight multiplied by fineness multiplied by spot. A one-ounce .9999 bar contains one troy ounce of gold. A Krugerrand contains one troy ounce of gold despite weighing more than an ounce overall, because it is alloyed with copper for durability. That distinction — gross weight versus actual gold weight — is worth understanding before you compare offers anywhere.

Because it is this transparent, you can and should check spot on your phone while we work. We would rather you did.

Bars from well-known refiners are quicker to verify and therefore easier to transact on. PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, Valcambi, Perth Mint, the Royal Canadian Mint and Argor-Heraeus are all names we see constantly.

An unknown or unmarked bar is not a problem, it just takes longer. We test it properly rather than declining it, and the gold is worth what the gold is worth once we have confirmed the purity.

Counterfeit bars do exist, particularly tungsten-cored fakes in larger sizes, which is exactly why verification happens in front of you rather than in a back room.

Many smaller bars ship sealed in a tamper-evident assay card carrying a serial number that matches the bar.

Leave it sealed. An intact card and matching serial is documentary proof of weight and purity that transfers with the bar. Once you cut the bar out, that proof is gone, and while the gold has not changed, the bar becomes a piece of unverified metal that needs full testing.

It is a small difference on a one-ounce bar and a more meaningful one on larger sizes. People open them out of curiosity all the time and there is no way to put it back.

Modern bullion coins are minted as investment products rather than as collectibles, so they are valued on gold content the same as bars.

American Gold Eagle — one troy ounce of gold, alloyed, so total weight is higher. Canadian Maple Leaf — .9999 fine. Krugerrand — one troy ounce of gold in a copper alloy. American Buffalo — .9999 fine. Fractional halves, quarters and tenths all trade too.

One exception worth knowing: a handful of specific years and special issues do carry collector premiums above bullion. If yours is one of them we will tell you, rather than quietly buying a scarce issue at melt.

If your coin is pre-1933 or clearly historic, it belongs on our collectible gold coins page instead, where the premium is the point.

All are priced on gold content, not design.

Online bullion buyers quote attractive rates and the process sounds frictionless. The risk sits in the middle of it: you ship real money to a company you have never met, and the offer is finalised once they hold the metal.

Two things go wrong. Assay disputes, where the buyer claims the purity came in below expectation and you have no way to independently check. And dealer insolvency, which is not hypothetical — we have written about a case where customers' mailed-in metal was caught up in a bankruptcy.
